Norwich airport expansion bid

However, EEDA’s findings have been rubbished by airport bosses who say it is
"unlikely" the infrastructure was in place to increase the airport to such an
extent.   The airport currently welcomes 750,000 travellers through the terminal
every year, but EEDA says this could rise to nearly 3million by 2030.   It estimates
there are 3,460 people directly or indirectly employed as a result of the airport,
1,400 in Norfolk with £22.1m generated for the county’s economy.   With the airport’s
expansion this could rise to more than 6,700, with 2,800 of those jobs being in
Norfolk alone, it claims.   The current terminal is able to cope with 2m passengers
a year and though an £8m improvement plan in already under way at the airport,
its owners, Omniport, say they have no plans to expand further.   Pat Gowen, from
Norwich FoE, slammed the content of the report as "speculative".   He said: "Such
growth is obviously unsustainable. This means that 100% of the UK’s permitted
CO2 permit would be used by the year 2050, leaving none whatsoever for other industrial,
domestic or traffic use." (Norwich Evening News)
