Ships emit more CO2 than aircraft

The global shipping industry is responsible for 1.2bn tonnes of carbon dioxide
a year, far more than aviation’s 600m tonnes, according to an estimate published
yesterday.   The previous widely accepted estimate was 600m-800m tonnes a year.

The report by DK Group, which is developing technology to make ships more efficient,
found shipping’s emissions were much higher than previously thought. The previous
widely accepted estimate was 600m-800m tonnes a year.   The company reached the
bigger estimate by including new vessels and by studying 7,749 vessels more than
175 metres long.     (Fiona Harvey, London   Financial Times   13.7.2007)
