Carlisle Airport plans get county council support

Plans to revamp Carlisle Airport, including the construction of a new terminal,
have won unanimous backing from Cumbria County councillors.   However, Carlisle
City Council have the final say on the plans, which have yet to be approved.

Stobart Air Limited wants to invest £25m in a re-branded Carlisle Lake District
Airport, to increase freight and passenger flights.   Cumbria County Council said
the proposals would ‘significantly boost’ the area’s economy as well as helping
to attract jobs and investment.

The plans include the construction of a new £30m runway, passenger terminal,
air traffic control centre, hangars, office buildings, distribution warehouses
and airport parking facilities at the site of the existing Carlisle Airport.

Geoff Prest, of Cumbria County Council, said: “This airport will be good for
Cumbria.   Every effort is being made to support the application and to make sure
it stands up when the final planning decision is made.   It will bring much-needed
investment and jobs into the region and also make it easier to use Carlisle as
a platform for growth.’   For too long Cumbrian residents and visitors have had
to travel unacceptable distances when using airports.”

Cumbria’s regeneration agency has already given its support to the plans.

The proposed plans would also see the offices of sister company Eddie Stobart,
the Cumbrian-based haulage firm, move to the site, as well as the development
of an air freight terminal.

Last year Cumbrian tourist officials backed the plans, saying the region was
missing out to other parts of the UK such as Devon and Cornwall which enjoyed
air links to many cities.
