Birmingham Airport announces plans to merge two terminals

19.1.2010   (Birmingham Mail)

Birmingham Airport has announced plans to merge its two terminals as passenger
numbers fell by more than five per cent compared to 2008.

The airport said it will invest £13m in the new facility in a bid to improve
its passenger flows and operational efficiency as well as creating a larger centralised
passenger security search area, an enlarged meeting and greeting arrivals point,
and an improved shopping and catering offer in both landside and airside areas.

This scheme is in addition to another £1.5m project to merge the current four
control rooms which will be operational at the beginning of March.

Paul Kehoe, the Airport’s CEO, said: "Our goal for 2010 is to improve the passenger
experience and these projects will create a smoother journey through the terminal
and improve our overall efficiently. Over the next 10 years we will invest £200
million on our facilities, which will help us achieve our vision of doubling our
passenger numbers by 2018.

"Birmingham Airport is a complex organisation which has experienced growth in
recent years and has to respond to growing expectations from customers, service
partners and the wider industry.

"These projects will enable us to come out of the current down-turn in a stronger
position to attract new customers and showcase Birmingham Airport as the region’s
global gateway; not only to the Midlands but also the wider catchment and show
that it’s a viable alternative to London and Manchester."

On the passenger numbers – which saw a drop of 5.5%, Mr Kehoe said the decline
was a trend seen across tthe industry.

He said: "2009 was a challenging year for the industry and we’re expecting another
difficult year ahead with consumer confidence still at a low. Nevertheless, there
are some exciting developments planned for 2010 to improve our passenger experience,
which will allow us to come out of the downturn in a stronger and more competitive
position to achieve the airport’s vision of doubling its passenger numbers by
2018."

Some 7,025,369 people used scheduled flights in 2009, 77.1 per cent of the total
figure. The top three scheduled destinations were Dublin, Dubai and Amsterdam.

Charter traffic accounted for 22.9 per cent of the total figure with 2,083,820
people using these services last year. The top three charter destinations were
Palma, Dalaman and Tenerife.

Birmingham Airport is about to embark on a £13m investment to merge its two terminals
into a single facility to improve its passenger flows and operational efficiency.

in both landside and airside areas.

This scheme is in addition to another £1.5m project to merge the current four
control rooms into a single facility, combining apron management, engineering
facilities, terminal management and security control. This is to ensure that as
the Company moves forward it runs an efficient operation that can coordinate and
communicate effectively with all its operational partners across the site. It
will be operational at the beginning of March. Paul Kehoe, the Airport’s CEO,
said, "Our goal for 2010 is to improve the passenger experience and these projects

In the spring of this year, passengers will also see the opening of a new £1.3
million Emirates lounge, exclusively for its premium passengers and a new tourist
information centre to help with passengers’ onward travel needs.

The one terminal development will start in January and will be completed before
the summer season in May 2011
