Joint demo against expansion at London City and Manchester airports  on Saturday 4th September       Details at  http://www.campaigncc.org/

Members of Stop Expansion at Manchester Airport are teaming up with the Fight the Flights at London City Airport group to stage a joint demonstration at both airports. There will be a morning protest outside City Airport at 11am, before boarding an open-top double-decker red bus to raise awareness of the anti-expansion and anti  domestic flights message. The Campaign Against Climate Changes and protesters are calling for an end to domestic flights and instead urge commuters to ‘take the train, not plane’.

Airport Master Plan:    Master Plan to 2030

Consultation in summer 2006.  Published late 2006 or early 2007.

Key details of Master Plan:

Manchester Airport's master plan claims that:

"For every 1 million air passengers, 3,000 jobs are created nationally, 2,000 regionally and 1,425 in the immediate sub-region."   (this is highly unlikely to be true).

"In 2006, the Airport handled over 22 million passengers travelling on around 226,000 aircraft movements.  Over 100 airlines now serve over 200 destinations worldwide. The Airport is one of the UK’s major cargo airports, handling 151,000 tonnes of cargo in 2006.

"The forecasts for Manchester suggest that by 2015, the Airport could be handling some 38 million passengers a year, and that this could rise to around 50 million by 2030. We broadly agree with the forecasts in the Future of Air Transport White Paper."

Aircraft movements are forecast to grow to 353,000 by 2015, and cargo throughput is forecast to grow to approximately 250,000 tonnes by 2015."

The airport finished Terminal 2 in 1993 and the opening of the Second Runway in 2001. Manchester is now the only UK airport, beside Heathrow, to have 2 main runways. That gives capacity for the future and we have no plans for a 3rd runway.

Future expansion that the airport wants:

Figures from the Committee on Climate Change report (December 2009) show the DfT considers that Manchester Airport might have a runway capacity of 500,000 ATMs per year by 2050, and might have 449,000 ATMs annually by then.   (http://tinyurl.com/ybczeenpgs 27-28)   This compares to around 162,000 ATMs in 2009.
