Newquay Airport

Some general information about Newquay airport:   The flying operations at the RAF Base on the opposite side of the runway   (RAF St. Mawgan) ceased in the spring of 2008.

EC Funding ( £24.3m for Newquay airport is approved

 5th July 2009
A £24.3m grant to help redevelop Newquay was approved by the EC. Officials
said the money, from Cornwall Council, the EU and South West Regional Development
Agency, conformed to EU state aid rules. It was approved because the airport’s
transition from a partial military base to a fully civilian airport (up to 1.4m
pax) was deemed beneficial to Cornwall’s development. The Commission has already
awarded the airport a 22.5m £19m EU grant. (BBC)       Click here to view full story…

Draft Masterplan consultation:  was in November 2008.   Ended January 2009.
The airport’s website states:

A key recommendation of the Air Transport White Paper was the production of site specific Airport Masterplans.

The Masterplan was approved and published in June 2009.  It sets out the current short term development requirements within a strategic context and establishes a framework for long-term strategic objectives for the re-development of the airport up until 2030.

This plan is currently under review.

The updated plan will be uploaded when available

Report on Draft 2008 Master Plan:
The combined local opposition groups, Groundswell Cornwall, Rising Tide, AirportWatch south west and SNARE (Stop Newquay Airport Expansion) produced a brief, but very informative,  report on the Draft Master Plan.   This is at   Report on Draft Master Plan

The airport acknowledges that forecasting and predicting future numbers is difficult,
in uncertain times.

In 2008 the passenger numbers growth projections were that numbers will rise from

350,000 per year in 2007 / 2008   to

1,010,000 by   2015/ 2016         to

1,150,000 by   2025 / 2026       to

1,430,000 by   2030 / 2031.     (Page 70 of the Master Plan)

[But the reality was that in 2013 the airport handled 174,891 passengers].

and Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) would rise from around 10,200 per year in 2007
/2008 to 25,400 in 2030 / 2031.

They also want to increase business and executive jet traffic, from around 860
air movements per year now, to around 5,000 by 2030 / 2031.

Meanwhile, Cornwall County Council claims it   “wants the airport to become one
of the greenest airports in the UK and set new environmental standards for airport.

The airport has expanded rapidly over the last 5 years, with passenger numbers
increasing from around 70,000 in 2001 up to 352,000 in 2006. The existing terminal
will be able handle up to 700,000 passengers by 2011 and a new terminal being
planned will enable the airport to handle up to 2 million passengers
