240 jobs could go at Prestwick Airport

Almost half of the workforce at  one of Scotland’s largest airports are in danger
of losing their jobs.

Bosses at Prestwick today announced a redundancy consultation which could see
as many as 240 jobs go at the Ayrshire airport.

Chiefs said a decline in passenger numbers was to blame for the move at the airport
which employs about 500 people.

Behind the decline was a steep drop in the number of people taking charter holidays.

Last year, the number of non-scheduled passengers at Prestwick dropped by nearly
90 per cent.

Mark Rodwell, the airport’s chief executive, said: “What we need to do is look
at the workload of the airport over the summer months and look at the number of
employees who are needed to deliver that workload.”

Jim Winter, of Unite, said: “There will be a lot of uncertainty among staff.”

Passenger numbers were down    8.1% in December, compared to December 2007,   to
 155,639
