Bristol campaigners explore options for airport decision challenge

A protest group is taking legal advice on how to challenge the government’s decision
not to call in Bristol Airport’s expansion plans.

Stop Bristol Airport Expansion has criticised the refusal by the Government Office
for the South West to refer the scheme as “misguided”.

The £150 million project was recommended for approval by North Somerset Council
in May but involved the government because it includes green belt land (Planning,
28 May, p3).

Group spokeswoman Hilary Burn said: “We will do everything possible to overturn
this decision. We are looking at the paperwork and are taking legal advice on
the avenues open to us.”

The airport is concluding a section 106 agreement before bringing forward the
scheme. It includes car parking, aircraft stands and a terminal extension. Work
could begin next year.

Bristol Airport chief executive officer Robert Sinclair said: “Approval of these
proposals recognises the airport’s vital contribution to regional prosperity,
while ensuring that environmental considerations are tackled.”

The council’s executive member for strategic planning Elfan Ap Rees said: “The
application underwent a vigorous examination and all parties had the chance to
put forward their case.”
