Cambridge Airport wants to expand its passenger flights

The Marshall Group, owner of Cambridge Airport, UK, is preparing to embark on a £20 million  investment to develop the airport’s land and upgrade its infrastructure.  Groundbreaking on the green field site, located to the south of the runway, is scheduled for July. Plans include a new taxiway and the rehabilitation of the runway.  The airport says it has increased executive aviation movements. It is getting regional airline services and leading aviation companies as tenants. It wants to entice more businesses to the airport:   Though it did well in 2001, the airport has too few commercial passengers to be recorded by the CAA.

The Marshall Group, owner of Cambridge Airport, UK, is preparing to embark on a £20 million ($32.5 million) investment to develop the airport’s land and upgrade its infrastructure.  Groundbreaking on the green field site, located to the south of the runway, is scheduled for July.

Plans include a new taxiway and the rehabilitation of the runway.  It is intended that a new drainage system will add considerable environmental benefits.

The investment follows what Cambridge has described as a strong year, having welcomed increased executive aviation movements, regional airline services and leading aviation companies as tenants.

Airport Director Archie Garden, who is leading the expansion with Infrastructure Director Sheila Kissane, said he would like to entice more businesses to the airport:  “We have the land available to the south side of the airport and this is driving the next phase of our strategy to develop new buildings in the area.

“Tenants will be offered a range of property development options including self-build, build and buy back or lease of properties.  A vibrant business park, a hotel for crew, operator bases – this is the type of project that could be achieved,” he added.

Very low passenger figures

Though Cambridge airport had around 18,000 passengers in 2001, the number then dropped to 2,000 or 3,000 per year – falling to a number too low for the CAA to record in 2010 and 2011.    CAA passenger data 2001 – 2011

Cambridge Airport announces new initiative to capitalise on the 2012 Olympics

[Yet another small airport trying to cash in on the Olympics…]

By Paula Garrett at UK airports information blog
East of England-based Cambridge Airport has announced a new initiative to attract business aviation operators to the airport during major sporting events.

Launched under the brand of Major Events Service the airport is offering charter operators, government fleets and private owners the opportunity to pre-purchase guaranteed parking slots with a one-time fee that also includes all landing and take off costs. Looking to next year, peak periods are expected in July and August just before and after the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics. The package, which applies to an individual aircraft’s tail-number incorporates a deposit paid upfront of £5k, and is designed to support operators already planning their activity during this time. “Cambridge Airport is perfectly positioned for the games as it takes just under an hour by convenient road networks to reach the east London area where the main Olympic stadium is based,” says Archie Garden, Airport Director. “ We anticipate the airport’s location and innovative pricing strategy will be of particular interest to the larger jets who will easily see the value of the proposition. For example a Gulfstream or Global Express that flies in and out once will easily recoup their spend, and for mid-size aircraft only two or three movements are required within the specified time frame to make it cost effective.” Cambridge airport will have capacity for up to 90 average size business jets and is offering the deal on a first come first served basis. With aircraft parking anticipated to be a challenge, the new initiative allows operators to pre-book their space, without having to commit to specific slots. The offer which is available until 1 November 2011 is tailored specifically for the dates of 26th July until 13 August 2012.
