The petition says the Nantes airport project is an  economic, social and environmental aberration.  Located 18 km from the center of Nantes, it would not solve the problems in the city’s current airport. It  would only move them.  It would inflict serious nuisance on over 80 000 inhabitants of the municipalities in the northern suburbs of Nantes.  Connecting the various structures that it needs (roads, railways, bridge on Loire) would also cause problems (expropriations – compulsory purchase) and nuisance to thousands of others. The colossal cost of this infrastructure would weigh on the taxes of people across the department and result in budget cuts in other areas such as education and health. With traffic of up to 9 million passengers, this airport would significantly increase emissions of greenhouse gases. So we say NO to the airport project of Notre Dame des Landes!

Pourquoi c’est important

Près de Nantes, à Notre-Dame-des-Landes, un projet d’aéroport gigantesque menace 2000 ha de terres agricoles bocagères d’une biodiversité exceptionnelle.
Le projet date des années 60, pour le Concorde, et les raisons affichées pour sa construction ont beaucoup changé au fil des années et des contre arguments des opposants.
Aujourd’hui, alors qu’il n’y a aucun problème de saturation ni de sécurité à l’aéroport actuel de Nantes-Atlantique et que le contexte ne favorise pas la croissance du secteur aérien, l’Etat, avec l’appui des élus locaux et régionaux (PS et UMP main dans la main sur ce dossier), a attribué la construction et la concession pour 55 ans de cet aéroport soit disant HQE au groupe Vinci.
360 millions d’euros minimum d’investissement public y seraient engloutis.
Paradoxalement, le besoin de cette nouvelle construction n’est en rien avéré et aucune alternative ni optimisation de la plateforme existante n’ont été étudiées…
De plus en plus de voix s’élèvent contre ce scandale écologique et économique.
Malgré une forte opposition et les démonstrations de l’aberration de ce projet, les études environnementales, archéologiques, etc, avancent avec un important déploiement de forces de l’ordre et une violence policière croissante.
Un collectif d’élu-e-s opposé-e-s au projet a été créé en juin 2009. Il réunit actuellement près de 1000 élu-e-s de familles politiques diverses. Ce collectif a financé une étude économique réalisée par un cabinet d’étude indépendant dont la conclusion est sans appel : le projet ne se justifie pas non plus économiquement.

LE PROJET D’AÉROPORT DE NOTRE-DAME-DES-LANDES est une aberration économique, sociale et environnementale!!! Situé à 18 km du centre de Nantes, il ne résoudrait pas les problèmes que pose à la ville l’actuel aéroport. Il les déplacerait seulement. Il infligerait des nuisances graves à plus de 80 000 habitants des communes de la banlieue nord de Nantes. Les diverses structures de raccordement qui lui seraient nécessaires (routes, voies ferrées, pont sur la Loire) causeraient également des problèmes (expropriations) et des nuisances à des milliers d’autres personnes. Le coût colossal de cette infrastructure pèserait sur les impôts des habitants de tout le département et entraînerait des réductions de budget dans d’autres domaines tels l’éducation et la santé. Avec un trafic pouvant aller jusqu’à 9 millions de passagers, cet aéroport augmenterait considérablement les émissions de gaz à effet de serre. Nous disons donc NON au projet d’aéroport de Notre-Dame-des-Landes!!!

Why It Matters

Near Nantes, in Notre-Dame-des-Landes, a huge airport project threatens 2000 ha of farmland hedgerow of exceptional biodiversity. 
The project dates back 60 years, for Concorde, and the reasons given for its construction  have changed over time and against arguments of opponents. 
Today, though there is no lack of airport capacity problem or safety  problem of the existing airport at Nantes Atlantique and the context does not favor expansion in air travel, the State, with the support of local and regional representatives (UMP and PS together on this issue), has awarded the construction and 55 years concession of this airport is called HQE group Vinci. 
€360 million at the minimum of public investment would be swallowed up. 
Paradoxically, the need for this new construction is by no means proven and no alternative or optimization of existing platform have been studied … 
More and more voices have been raised against this ecological and economic scandal.
Despite strong opposition and demonstrations of the aberration of the project, with environmental, archaeological studies, etc., this has taken place with a large deployment of security forces and growing police violence.

A group of elected representatives who are opposed to the project was created in June 2009.  It currently has nearly 1,000 elected representatives of various political groupings. This group has funded an economic study by an independent research firm whose conclusion is clear: the project is not justifed economically.
