Runway Extension
The airport completed (October 2011) a 124 metre extension to its main runway. This was approved by Aberdeen City Council in December 2006. Runway is now 1,953 metres. The airport comments that this is not for long haul flight in future, but the main reason for the extension is to enable their existing carriers operate in a manner that is more commercially viable.

BAA Aberdeen published a Master Plan in 2006. And another in January 2013.
Key details of 2006 Master Plan: (plan no longer available online)
– £10m two year international development plan, including runway extension, expanded international arrivals hall
– £60m investment over next decade
– Up to 4 million passengers by 2015, and 5.9 million by 2030
– Two million international visitors by 2030
The 2006 Master Plan contained proposals for the international arrivals hall to be extended and refurbished, providing additional terminal capacity, a larger Customs and Immigration hall, and improved. Also the construction of the first phase of a 300 metre runway extension designed to increase the range of international destinations within direct range of Aberdeen.

It says: “Current forecasts predict that Aberdeen airport will be handling around 4.0 million passengers a year by 2020.” and “Current forecasts estimate that Aberdeen will handle around 5.0 million passengers a year by 2040.” [The 2040 forecast is well below that of the 2006 master plan, above].
