Eastern Group buys majority stake in Humberside Airport

August 8, 2012

Eastern Group, parent company of UK regional carrier Eastern Airways, has bought a controlling share in its home base, Humberside Airport, in northeast England.

The Group acquired the 82.7% shareholding of former owner, Manchester Airports Group (MAG), for an undisclosed sum.

Humberside has a modest annual passenger throughput of around 275,000. MAG will now concentrate on its strategy of maximizing growth opportunities offered by the larger Manchester, East Midlands and Bournemouth airports.

MAG chief executive, Charlie Cornish, said, “MAG has believed for some time that the best long-term operational model for Humberside Airport was with a new owner that could focus on taking the business forward into the next phase of its development.”

Eastern Group chairman Bryan Huxford, said: “We are making a strategic financial investment acquiring Humberside Airport.  The airport has potential for growth, and under the present airport management team, supported by Eastern Group, will develop in accordance with the business plan already in place.”

Apart from scheduled and charter airline services, Humberside is the second-largest airport-based heliport serving the North Sea offshore industry.  Link to article

MAG scraps sale of Humberside Airport

17th December 2008         Manchester Airports Group (MAG) has failed to find a buyer for its stake in Humberside Airport. Perishables hub opens at Humberside Airport

10.11.08         A £1.6 million development that will help firms access global markets was opened
by a Government minister at Humberside Airport today. The Minister for Yorkshire and the Humber, Rosie Winterton, opened the
Perishables Hub, which will provide global and regional businesses with airside
cold storage facilities.

The new facilities will enable perishable goods, for example seafood, to be flown
direct in to the airport and stored immediately. This will dramatically boost
the airport’s abilities in air-freighted distribution and reduce the miles food
currently travels.
