After nearly two years of dithering, Cornwall County Council – which owns the
airport – has  decided to release the Masterplan for the development of Newquay
Airport, incorporating a threefold expansion of passenger numbers between 2007
and 2030.

There will be a series of public  exhibitions and presentations in the area, starting
on 1st December. Details below.

Newquay airport says air travel is essential to the UK economy and to promote
continued economic growth and investment in Cornwall.     Newquay Cornwall Airport
says it makes it easier for residents to get away for holidays as well as providing
a gateway to Cornwall and improving  the region’s access to UK and European business
markets.

This is the front cover of the consultation document.

The airport acknowledges that forecasting and predicting future numbers is difficult,
in uncertain times.

The passenger numbers growth projections are that numbers will rise from

350,000 per year in 2007 / 2008   to

1,010,000 by   2015/ 2016         to

1,150,000 by   2025 / 2026       to

1,430,000 by 2030 / 2031.

and Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) would rise from around 10,200 per year in 2007
/2008 to 25,400 in 2030 / 2031.

They also want to increase business and executive jet traffic, from around 860
air movements per year now, to around 5,000 by 2030 / 2031.

Meanwhile, Cornwall County Council claims it   “wants the airport to become one
of the greenest airports in the UK and set new environmental standards for airport
related development.”

and it says the airport’s long-term vision is:

  • the creation of a safe, secure and efficient, commercially successful regional
    airport;
  • a focal point for a major strategic employment area, based around aviation related
    and associated activities which acts as a key driver of the whole Cornish economy
    and;
  • an airport designed to the best sustainable development principles, offering
    a model for other regional airports.

(SEA) has also been undertaken. The SEA provides a sustainability appraisals of
