Campaigners are preparing for a day of protest at plans to expand Manchester

Members of Stop Expansion at Manchester Airport are teaming up with the Fight
the Flights at London City Airport group to stage a joint demonstration at both

They plan to hold a morning protest outside City Airport, London, before boarding
an open-top double-decker red bus to raise awareness of their anti-expansion message.

The protesters will call for an end to domestic flights and instead will urge
commuters to ‘take the train, not plane’.

They will then catch a train to Manchester to voice their opposition to plans
to bulldoze two family homes on Hasty Lane, Ringway, to make way for a cargo unit.

The event, on Saturday, September 4, will culminate in a party on Hasty Lane
with residents who stand to lose their homes when the three-bedroom detached properties
are demolished and replaced with an 18,000 square metre hangar, off Runger Lane.

A spokesman for the protest called on campaigners to make it a ‘fun day of aviation

It will be the latest in a string of protest events since airport bosses were
granted permission to pull down the cottages on Hasty Lane in November.

A spokesman for Manchester Airport said: "Long-term forecasts for air cargo demand
remain robust and our existing transit units are all occupied. Our proposal to
continue with the development of this new unit will give us an opportunity to
have modern facilities in place to take advantage of the economic recovery ahead
of competitor airports."
