Australia banning noisy aircraft – a world first?

Australia is set to ban the noisiest aircraft from landing at its airports. Simply banning the nosiest aicraft is one of the most effective ways of reducing noise nuisance. Yet the UK government refuses to adopt this obvious and effective measure, despite saying it is concerned about aircraft noise. Australia is set to press ahead with a ban on Antonov 124s and the AN225 from September 1st, and operators will only be allowed to use them with a permit.

DEFRA: No plans for stakeholder events on Airport Noise Action Plans

DEFRA has confirmed, in a response to a letter from an AirportWatch member, that there are no current plans to hold a stakeholder event to consider airport NAPs. However the Department for Transport proposes to publish a summary of emerging trends and issues arising from the plans later this year. 17 airports in England were required to submit draft plans to Government.

Farnborough Airport inquiry hears new round of noise arguments

Arguments about how annoying the noise of 50,000 flights over homes each year might be have continued at the Farnborough Airport inquiry this week, as an end to the proceedings looms. Airport owner TAG - fighting to be given permission for 50,000 flights a year instead of 28,000 - has been arguing with Rushmoor Borough Council about how effective a system for measuring noise is. The arbitrary 57 dB contour is irrelevant to those suffering noise on the ground.

Gatwick Campaigners slam airport’s revised noise action plan

Campaigners from GACC have attacked the revised Gatwick Airport Noise Action Plan as "flawed" and the result of a consultation which was "largely a sham." GACC says the current situation on the draft NAP is "extremely unsatisfactory." From a FoI request they have discovered that the revised draft after consultation only included a few changes even though the public - and GACC - had submitted many comments and constructive proposals. The Noise Action Plans published today are for road and rail, not for airports which were done during 2009. Also published today is the Noise Policy Statement for England (NPSE) which sets out noise management policy for the first time in the form of the Government’s long term vision to manage noise and improve health and quality of life through the management of noise within the context of Government policy on sustainable development. Plans to tackle airport noise a sham, say campaigners

Research by AEF for AirportWatch has found that airport ‘noise action plans’ will fail to tackle impacts on local communities. European laws now require airports to draw up action plans to tackle their noise pollution. But these plans are written by the airports themselves, and just re-state what they already have to do to comply with, local planning requirements. Not one plan meets all the requirements of the EC law, and airports have failed even to comply with the weak demands of the EU’s legislation.
