Scotland – Hilton delegates shocked by the elephant in the room

A 5 metre high Giant Inflatable Elephant shocked delegates at the Edinburgh Caledonian Hilton today with a massive banner stating ’Aviation is the Elephant in the Room.’ The display took place outside a Hilton hosted conference that brings organisations and researchers together to discuss how to ‘deliver the national transport strategy whilst meeting… climate change targets’. Plane Stupid Scotland occupy roof of Scottish Parliament

Two environmental activists from Plane Stupid Scotland, have climbed onto the roof of the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh to protest against plans for expansion of Scottish airports. They got on to the roof of the Parliament at about 9am and unfurled a large banner which carries a parody of the Trainspotting design, "Choose Life." The banner reads, "Plane Stopping: Choose the future. Say no to airport expansion." (Plane Stupid)

Nottingham East Midlands – Climate change protest at airport

Dozens of people dressed as PM Gordon Brown have protested against climate change issues at East Midlands Airport. East Midlands FoE wants the government's new Climate Change Bill to include carbon emissions for the aviation industry. FoE's Callie Lister said it was "crazy to leave out emissions from planes and ships". As planes flew over East Midlands Airport, the protesters covered their eyes "hoping emissions would just go away". (BBC)

Lincoln – paper plane stunt to highlight climate change

Hundreds of paper aeroplanes have been handed out in Lincoln's High Street by a man dressed as Gordon Brown. The stunt, by Lincoln's FoE, was intended to highlight the effects of aviation on climate change. The planes given out were each emblazoned with the word 'missing', because campaigners say the effects of aviation pollution are missing from the new climate change bill which is set to become law later this year. Edinburgh Airport – Climate change campaigners plan airport protest over Bill

Environmental campaigners will target Edinburgh Airport on Saturday to highlight the growing problem of carbon dioxide emissions from the aviation industry. The Edinburgh branches of the WDM and FoE are holding the protest as part of a bid to get the Government to include international aviation emissions in a new Climate Change Bill. Leeds Bradford – Protest over Yorkshire airports

Climate change campaigners from flood affected areas in Yorkshire have launched a protest against airport expansion. Fifteen people blockaded the entrance to government offices on City Walk, Leeds, demonstrating over aviation growth that is linked to flooding. (UK Airport News)

Runway protesters Plane Stupid take to roof of parliament

Protesters demonstrating against plans for a third runway at Heathrow airport today staged a demonstration on the roof of the Houses of Parliament. The five activists, from the campaign group Plane Stupid, had unfurled two huge banners, one saying "No third runway", and the other, "BAA HQ", in a reference to the airport's operator. (Guardian)

Climate protest by Greenpeace on Heathrow plane

Greenpeace activists breached security at Heathrow Airport and climbed on top of an aeroplane. Four people were arrested after unfurling a banner from the top of the plane after it landed at the airport on a flight from Manchester. (BBC)

Klimax (Sweden): climate activists in detention after trying to break into airport

Groups of activists connected to Klimax, Sweden’s direct action movement against the root causes of climate change, struck against the country’s domestic aviation industry. At Malmö Airport, 7 activists were apprehended trying to break into the runway, some of them dressed as polar bears. They were transferred to a detention centre and held for more than 60 hours.
